CLINICAL TRIALS IN GERMANY
Germany is now one of the world's most influential players in the pharmaceutical market, leading the way in terms of R&D investment and patent applications.Demand for German products continues to grow due to their quality, innovation and long tradition in clinical research. Germany is the largest pharmaceutical market in Europe and the world. Germany spends 11.1% of its annual GDP on healthcare.
Clinical trials in Germany are approved by either the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices or the Paul Ehrlich Institute, depending on the product being studied; the Paul Ehrlich Institute is responsible for investigating clinical trials for vaccines and biologics, while the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices is responsible for everything else. These two bodies are the regulatory authorities that approve a clinical trial within 60 days. In addition, the clinical trial must be approved by the relevant ethics committee within 30 days.
German health care itself is a dual public system: free and private health insurance. Free health insurance is regulated by the Joint Federal Health Committee, which ensures access to health care for all. The private system is provided by private health insurance, which replaces or supplements the public system.
